Peak Accommodation Proxima Reopens This Year

Th 14 August 2025

Student housing Proxima at Zernike Campus is once again offering peak accommodation this year. International students who do not yet have permanent housing at the start of the academic year can stay here for three months. During that time, students can look for permanent housing.

More than 800 beds

Proxima has space for 401 international students. At the start of the academic year, the rooms can be double-occupied, providing space for 802 students. Each room in Proxima has a regular bed and a fold-out bed. This year, 301 fold-out beds are available for peak accommodation and 100 for exchange students. Students who book a fold-out bed are matched with a roommate of the same gender. The two students share the rent costs. Both the regular beds and the peak accommodation beds can be easily booked via the SSH website.

Six months for exchange students

This year, 100 peak beds will be used to house exchange students for six months. An exchange student spends half a year in the Netherlands through an exchange program. Because their stay is only a few months longer than the “normal” peak accommodation period, it is difficult for them to find suitable follow-up housing. Therefore, we offer this group six months of accommodation, so they do not have to look for another room in the meantime.

About the peak period

At the start of the academic year, there is a peak period. New international students arrive, while many graduating students have not yet vacated their rooms. Therefore, additional accommodation is arranged during this period.

This approach is made possible thanks to the Youth and Student Housing Groningen 2023–2026 agreement, in which the University of Groningen (RUG), Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Municipality of Groningen, and SSH work together on a structural basis. Thanks to the agreement, these organizations can quickly connect with each other. In 2024, 175 students made use of the peak accommodation. It is not yet known how many students will use it in 2025.
